camp in Tuva

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

The Asylum Street Spankers, formed in Austin, Texas in 1994, is a band whose music is rooted in early 20th century American musical forms. Founded by Guy Forsyth, Wammo and Christina Marrs at a legendary party at the famous Dabbs Hotel along the Llano River in Texas, the band began by busking on the streets of Austin and playing for tips in bars. In their earliest days, the Spankers' repertoire consisted almost entirely of country, blues, jazz, swing and Tin Pan Alley songs dating from the 1890s to the 1950s with a particular emphasis on the 1920s and 1930s. While their tone was raucous and irreverent, the band was also known for its musicianship, theatricality and militant acousticism. Until 2004 they played the vast majority of their concerts without any amplification at all. Not only did this heighten the theatricality of their shows, it caused the musicians to develop inventive vocal and instrumental arrangements in order to constantly engage an audience in such a quiet performance. Several early members were actors and nearly all members have been multi-instrumentalists.

With the departure of Forsyth in 1997, the Spankers' began playing more original songs, most written in the roots styles the band had already mastered. By 1999 only Marrs and Wammo remained of the line up that gained massive popularity in Austin and around Texas. They have also released A Christmas Spanking; Mercurial, an album recorded live using technology and techniques of 1940s vintage; My Favorite Record, an album about their love of music; X-rated EPs; and an album of songs about children and childhood heavily inspired by Shel Silverstein and Maurice Sendak. Win a raffle prize or revel in the company of Barbossa's crewmembers from the hit Disney movie Pirates of the Caribbean; Curse of the Black Pearl: The forceful Bo'sun who slapped Miss Swan - Isaac C Singelton Jr., the creepy Koehler who choked Captain Jack through the bars of his cell - Treva Etienne, and the sadistic grenade tossing Jacoby - Vince Lozano. Guests are encouraged to come dressed in their best pirate gear and enter The Best Dressed Pirate contest. 100% of the event’s gross proceeds will go to The Children’s Hospital and Research Center of Oakland.

WHO:
Pirates for Children’s Hospital of Orange County (“Pirates4choc”) was started by Evan Pagay, an Orange County DJ and Jack Sparrow impersonator, and Matt Stone, owner of Sea Wolf Clothing Company in Huntington Beach. Evan and Matt gathered a group of piratical celebrities and entertainers to donate their time to entertain, give out toys, and play games with the children and their families in the hospital. The event was so successful, the group decided to launch a similar hospital visit and fund raiser in Northern California under the leadership of Craig Appel, local Bay Area pirate entertainer.

Celtic Sands to Perform on Saturday for SF Celtic Fest

Celtic Sands, a Pacifica-based celtic folk rock trio, is performing this saturday March 22nd at the SF Celtic Festival from 8-9pm at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Oakland. The band has appeared on Pacifica's Channel 26 and has a newly-released cd that just came out this February.
Celtic Sands is comprised of Lara Garner on harp, piano, tin whistle, recorder, bodhran and vocals; Ben Roberts on fiddle and mandolin; and Gomer Hendrix on guitar, fretless bass, percussion and vocals. Their style has been exciting audiences all over California with their combination of traditional celtic, with virtuoso improvisation, original songs, and the edginess of celtic rock. At other times, Lara's "sweet voice and...etheral harp" pulls the audience into a time machine, bringing us back to the time of the ancient celts, Irish legends, and Scottish castles.
Their new cd is entitles "Wild Horses" and can be purchased online on the group's website at www.celticsands.com or on cdbaby.com and in person at Manor Music in Pacifica. You can also see streaming video of their live tv performance on the Bruce Latimer Show on their website.
The SF Celtic Festival starts at 2pm and finishes at midnight. There will be traditional Scottish and Irish dancing, regional foods, great bands, Celtic handicrafts and jewelry. I found this trio at Bobolink Music Festival, and while I usually
do not enjoy the electro sets as much as others, I was sure

Gomer Hendrix has a 3 piece band, acoustic, drums, upright bass
with vocals. Each week at the Harmony Center for the Joyful Spirit
the one hour service features at least 8 to 10 songs by the band.
Services are held at the Veterans Memorial Hall on the corner of
Grand and Harrison by Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland at 11 am.
It's free, and there's plenty of parking, a very liberal celebration for all.
